What is wealth? What happiness? What moves us humans?

Alpo Aaltokoski Company’s Whirls is a colorful contemporary ballet in the spirals of human greed, the richness of life and the search for happiness. The central theme of the work is people’s ancient pursuit of happiness and balancing between temptations, greed and moderation, self, and community. Theme is based on story of sampo from Finnish epic poem Kalevala, but every generation gets to find its own sampo. What does the golden-egg-laying sampo, the riches grinding miracle machine, mean in this age? What if sampo is in us humans?

“Whirls is a very multi-layered work, from which you may find completely new things musically, from movement and visually on different viewings. — You don’t need to know anything about the Kalevala background.” – Annikki Alku
